I adopted a pet. Now what?

However, the first days and weeks can sometimes be a little different than expected as your new friend adjusts to their new life. Whether you’ve just adopted or are preparing to welcome a pet into your home, this guide will help you navigate those early days, weeks, and months so you and your new companion can thrive together.
How do I surrender my pet?
We understand that sometimes it is just not possible to keep a pet. This can be an extremly diffcult decision to make. Follow the link below for more information and next steps to take.

We ask that you call our Intake Center at 269-639-2242 to report a stray animal you have found. Continue reading below to find out more about what to expect.
How do I reclaim a lost pet?
Call our Intake Center at 269-639-2242 to place a lost report and to check if the animal is in our care. Each animal's owner is required to provide proof of ownership and up-to-date rabies vaccination.
Does Al-Van offer spay/neuter services?
Al-Van does not have a veterinarian on site, which means we are not able to provide spay/neuter surgeries to the public. At times when grant funds are secured, we are able to partner with local veterinarians to provide low cost spay/neuter clinics to the public.
How do I obtain a dog license?
Dog licenses can no longer be purchased at Al-Van Humane Society. Michigan Compiled Law 287.266 requires that all dogs over 4 months old must have BOTH a current rabies vaccination and a current dog license. Check your county website to learn how to obtain a dog license as requirements may vary by location.
Does Al-Van offer microchips & how do they work?
Al-Van does provide microship clinics throughout the year when grant funds are secured. Watch out Facebook page to stay up to date on clinic opportunities.
Does Al-Van help with feral/community cats?
At this time, Al-Van does not have a Trap-Neuter-Release program and we are unable to take in feral cats. Read more to learn how you can help feral/community cats in your area.
