Al-Van Humane Society is amoung the many shelters and rescues that are very concerned about toddler/puppy adoptions. Sure it's a cute picture but statistics show it usually doesn't work out.
Things to consider before bringing a puppy into your toddlers home...
- Puppies are puppies, they jump and scratch
- Toddlers are toddlers, they pull tails and ears and want to "investigate" the puppy. (Puppies do NOT like to be investigated!)
- Puppies will have "accidents" on the same carpet your toddler will play on
- Puppies will chew toddler's toys
- Puppies will take treats from people of their own height, and toddlers will eat from a bowl that can be reached
- Separating puppy from toddler will cause puppy to become uptight and unhappy due to lack of attention and exercise
Pets are a truly wonderful addition to a family.
But if the time isn't right, no one will be happy.
